Anna Wintour, the influential editor credited with reshaping Vogue and turning the Met Gala into a global spectacle, is stepping down as editor-in-chief of the US edition of the magazine after nearly 40 years.
According to Women’s Wear Daily and Fashion Week Daily, Wintour informed her staff of the decision during a meeting on Wednesday. Condé Nast, Vogue’s parent company, later confirmed the move to the New York Post.
Although she is leaving her top editorial role at US Vogue, Wintour is not exiting the fashion world. She will continue as Condé Nast’s global chief content officer and remain Vogue’s global editorial director.

Born in London in 1949 to a well-connected British family, Anna Wintour grew up surrounded by media and culture. Her father, Charles Wintour, was the editor of the Evening Standard, and his influence helped shape her early interest in journalism. She attended North London Collegiate School but was never drawn to academics as her focus was always fashion.
Wintour began cultivating her signature style in her teens, often defying school dress codes and experimenting with trends long before they became mainstream. She skipped university and instead took a more direct route into the fashion world, landing a job at a boutique before moving into editorial work. Her career took off in London’s fashion scene before she moved to New York in the 1970s, where she rose through the ranks at magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and New York before joining Condé Nast.
